Unifiram (DM-232) is an ampakine-like drug which is one of the strongest nootropics currently around, a synthetic compound that belongs to a class of compounds known as ampakines. Ampakines are known to increase levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain. Unifiram’s mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought to work by inhibiting the degradation of glutamate, leading to increased levels of glutamate in the synapses which enhances cognitive function. Unifiram shows chemical structural similarity with piracetam and is at least 1,000 times more potent than oxiracetam, nefiracetam, etiracetam, and aniracetam. Studies have demonstrated that Unifiram acts by modulating AMPA receptors with nootropic, anti-amnesic, anti-sedative, and anti-hipnotic effects. Unifiram boosts cognition and enhances rat hippocampal signals with EC₅₀ = 27 nM, and increases ACh (acetylcholine) in rat cortex.
